Orthodontic emergencies, thankfully, are quite rare and almost all problems can be rectified at home.
If you happen to encounter a problem that you can not solve, please call our office for advice or to arrange an appointment.
Quick guide to some Common Problems:
  • “What should I do if I have a broken bracket?”
    • Luckily, a broken bracket is not an urgent issue. In general, the bracket will remain attached to the wire, but it could rotate or slide on the wire. Orthodontic wax should be applied to the loose bracket to minimize any aggravation to the inside of your mouth. Please call our office to schedule a repair as soon as possible.
  • “What can I do if a wire comes loose and aggravates my cheek?”
    • Usually, a loose wire will not need to be repaired instantly. If you are experiencing irritation from a wire inside of your mouth, a steralized fingernail clipper can be used to trim the wire in question and remove the broken end. Call our office to arrange a repair.
  • “How do I prevent cheek & lip aggravation from my braces?”
    • Cheek and lip aggravation can last up to 2 weeks following initial installation of your braces. You can put wax to the offending brackets or wire to smooth the area. In time, your cheeks and lips will adapt to the your new appliances.
  • “What should I do if I encounter sore teeth?”
    • Soreness of the teeth can be normal 1 to 3 days after orthodontic adjustments or initial placement of braces. Acetaminophen (Tylenol®) can be taken if needed for the pain.
  • “What should I do if I have an injury involving my teeth?”
    • If there is a traumatic injury to your teeth or braces, call our office. The answering machine will give you our after hour’s number if we are not open.
